Sony Unveils Hologram Machine!

The future is here! Sony recently unveiled their latest product which is (and I’m not joking) a hologram! This Ray Modeler 360-degree autostereoscopic display prototype is essentially a real hologram machine. Apparently this prototype will display full 3D images without the need of 3D glasses. The display shows 360 degrees of unique images creating this amazing effect. The system displaying the images is only 13cm in diameter and 27cm in height, making it incredibly compact and images produced by this machine can be controlled with your hands with gestures.

After checking out the video above (which you should do as well) I started thinking about the future of this kind of technology. Off the top of my head I can’t think of many uses for technology like this since so much equipment is required just to add content to this display. I just googled “hologram machine ” which brought me here. I did this because I am watching a movie called “vanilla sky ” with Tom cruise. I paused it to see if the hologram of a jazz player, at a party he is throwing, could really be out there. I’m guessing it isn’t. Neat reason to have one.

“… unveiled their latest product which is (and I’m not joking) a hologram!” A hologram you say? Is a motorbike a car? Is a boat a plane? I mean, they all get you from one place to another so a guess they must all be the same? What you see above is a vertical strip of pixels (led?) spun very fast in a transparent tube (because it’ll take your fingers off). That does not make it a hologram as only a hologram is a hologram. Holograms are frozen images recorded as an interference pattern in a special holographic emulsion, very similar to photographic film but the image is formed from the interference pattern created by two wavefronts from a split and diverged laser beam (reference and object beams). The reference beam shines directly on the holographic plate while the object beam bounces off the object you are trying to record and onto the holographic plate. Th reference beam distance is fixed but the object beam distance varies according to the depth of various parts of the object. When the two beams meet on the plate, the tiny differences (after developing) form a unique pattern and when viewed with the original reference beam (transmission hologram), recreate a complete 3D image unlike anything you have seen before. The terms hologram and holography have been completed abused to the point nobody actually knows what they are anymore. Ignorance is bliss 😉
