Everyone who was alive during the 80s is well aware of the Sega Outrun Arcade system, some dedicated fans even bought one for their home.
Well Garnet Hertz took it one step further! Not only did he buy the arcade cabinet, he morphed it with a golf cart to bring the game to life!
The golf cart itself has two cameras on the top to help measure 3d space and calculate the outside world, with that data it uses software to combine graphics from the real world into the 8-bit game. Then the user simply plays the game and with the modded controls the user is literally driving the cart around.
Personally, I can’t imagine this item being fun to drive, I feel like it would be a terrifying experience. Although that’s the case, at the end of the day it’s still a really cool geek project to work; helps bring back childhood memories with a twist.
Now believe it or not, but this is not Hertz’s first project converting the real world into an 8-bit world. Hert’s first project was actually using the Microsoft Kinect to mirror your body movements onto popular 8-bit video game characters. All I can say is, that’s a true geek right there!
